Collection: Palma Boys Social Club
From his headquarters at the Palma Boys Social Club in East Harlem, Anthony ‘Fat Tony’ Salerno, controlled the largest numbers racket operation in New York, grossing up to $50 million per year in the 1960s. Unlike most mob bosses, he was very accessible to outsiders and mobsters from around the country would come to him for help with their disputes.
Even when the East Harlem neighborhood went from a predominantly Italian to a predominantly black neighborhood, Salerno managed to hold onto their interests and employ over 200 people in their street rackets.
The FBI bugged the place for 18 months in the mid-1980s, using Fat Tony’s recorded words against him.
The property is now empty and up for lease.
